Happy Birthday, Alika Ray!

In the Tidbits Birthday Girl series, each month we celebrate a local gal about town on her special day.

Our March birthday girl is model and actress Alika Ray. The talented Dallas-based beauty, repped by The Campbell Agency, has been in the business for 26 years, starting at age 17 when she landed the cover of Teen Magazine.

Happy birthday! How are you celebrating your birthday this year?
Very low key. Last year was the big 4-0 and we went hard. The next day, the whole country shut down.

How long have you been a model and how has social media changed the industry?
I've been modeling for 26 years! Social media has been the biggest change I’ve seen. It’s now become a popularity contest for modeling jobs with the number of your followers. Clients love to see at least a 10K following.

How do you stay "camera ready"?
Water, sunscreen, retinol and a small dance party everyday. Caffeine - I prefer Tazo Skinny Chai Latte with Oat Milk - and William Chris Wines for balance.

Current projects you're excited about?
I just shot some spring commercials for JCPenney that were a blast to work on. It was a bit of a full circle moment. One of my first jobs at 16 was shooting with them in back to school denim units. And now I'm still at it, but as the mom of the back to school kid.

Instagram hacks: one thing you always do and one thing you NEVER do?
Always find that good natural light. (Alexa - play Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves). Never Photoshop your face.

What does a jam-packed day look like for you?
I'm grateful now more than ever for busy days. Wake up and hit the Peloton for a good 30-minute bike bootcamp. Lots of virtual auditions - these days my bedroom transforms into an audition room. I'm a fit model for a couple of clients so my workout gets squeezed in before or after shoots. Shoots range from e-comm to hand modeling to teleprompter industrials to commercials.

What does a perfect girl's day out look like?
Brunch always. I love Oak Cliff/Bishop Arts area. So brunch at Paradiso, it is. Then walk off the mimosas while shopping at Marcel MarketHarkensback and Society candle shop. I think ending the day, sunset, downtown at The Thompson Hotel rooftop bar Catbird is clutch.

Local shops you love?
Go EasyBeatnik Fine Goods and Favor the Kind.

Who is your style icon?
Diana Ross. 70s glam with a bit of boho. Total. Trend. Setter.

What's your sign and do you identify with it?
Pisces Sun, Capricorn moon, and Libra rising. I love being a Pisces. A daydreamer and night thinker.

What's on your birthday wish list?
I’m an experience wish list type of person rather than things. I like to head to Mexico for a weekend getaway - my feet were meant to be fins, it’s the Pisces in me. But I’ll take a staycation and spa day at The Joule anytime. During these times though, let’s be real: Tata Harper Elixir Vitae Eye Cream and a vaccine, please!
