We Asked A Yogi

As gyms begin to reopen with smaller class sizes and new safety guidelines, we checked in with Mel Tello, owner of BEYOGA in the Heights.

718 W 18th St, Suite G

BEYOGA has been offering a full schedule of streaming workouts and, starting May 20, will add in-person classes. Why are people turning to yoga right now?
The mental benefits. It is scientifically proven to alleviate stress, and who couldn’t use a little less stress?!

What are your favorite poses?
Plank, total body toning and strength. Downdog (it just feels gooooood!). Locust, because it strengthens the whole back body and spine and counters tech neck, tech hunch and all things sitting at a computer create.

Where do you go for a pre- or post-class snack?
Teapresso for an iced tea or post-class boba. Nourish is my go-to for a smoothie. And Boomtown is my fave for an iced coffee or latte.

Why did you choose the Heights for your business?
The Heights is walkable, bikeable and bustling with people looking to BE in the community!

What's unique about BEYOGA?
Our teachers are all the best in town, they are all trained in how to teach to every person in the room—from newbie, pregnant to advanced yogi—and we care about the people’s bodies in our classes and treat them like they are our own.

On your yoga playlist..
"Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" by Coldplay.

Yoga accessories you can't live without?
My lululemon Align pants and my Manduka blocks… props are my best friend on my mat!

You're reopening your studio this week. What does group fitness look like now?
We will have semi-private classes (5 people max). Teachers will have designated space and will not walk around the room. Clients will be asked to pre-register (no walk-ins) and our front desk staff will open the doors and check each person in, so no need for clients to touch anything. We will disinfect before and after each class as well as the beginning and end of the day with disinfectant proven to kill COVID-19 and other viruses. All props will be removed for the safety of everyone and clients will need to bring their own mats and blocks. Clients will have a designated mat space to ensure social distancing is kept. We will also have blocks and such for sale at the studio.
