You're Gonna Go Gaga

Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion opens at the Dallas Museum of Art.

1. The new Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion exhibition at the DMA features 45 awe-inspiring couture creations spanning the career of Iris van Herpen, who has dressed Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Björk.

2. van Herpen was the first-ever designer to show a garment made with 3D printing on a runway.

3. She once interned with Alexander McQueen.

4. Born in 1984, van Herpen grew up in a small village in the Netherlands without a computer or TV.

5. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has six of her garments in their permanent collection.

6. On view is a skeleton dress, one seemingly emerging from water and another invoking smoke.

7. One of the garments has a neck made with umbrella spines; other pieces are fully made of metal but have high-volume ruffles. Many were made with 3D technology, including shoes.

8. The exhibition features pieces from all 15 of her avant garde collections. Each collection takes her six months to make.

9. van Herpen made her first-ever trip to Dallas for the exhibition opening last week. While she was here, she ate at El Bolero, stayed at the Fairmont and visited Klyde Warren Park, the Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge and the Nasher. See The New York Times piece about her stay.
