Recession depression has finally hit Houston. Sometimes the only escape from mutual fund misery and dismal job prospects is a proper drink. We found some spots where you can count your pennies while clinking glasses.

On nights that the Rockets play, the upstairs Treehouse at The Grove offers free queso with the purchase of a drink. Beers are $3 and “Booster Fuel”� frozen sangria swirls are only $4. Spectacular views of downtown and Discovery Green? Absolutely free. (Thursday – Sunday games only)

Escape to a place that feels more Hill Country than H-town and snag a seat overlooking the water. Hipsters are flocking to the new Cedar Creek, where the firepit out back is the perfect spot to debate bail-outs and bust-ups. Wine, beer and cocktails are discounted ’til 7 p.m. during the week.

Vintage Lounge (map) has unveiled a whole new look, and the casual patio atmosphere during happy hour is anything but clubby. They’ve got flatscreens and old school shuffleboard, plus $6 glasses of champagne and wine (think La Crema pinot noir). A troubled economy never tasted so good…
