And the great dessert debate continues in an inner-Loop Houston restaurant kitchen…
Crème Brulee: Oui, but everyone knows I am zee best. It takes the skill of a trained chef to properly blowtorch my perfectly crisp topper.
Cupcake: Um, hello? I’m everywhere these days. I’m yummy and trendy, and cute to boot. So there.
Pie: Listen, you fruitcakes, don’t mess with the original. I don’t need a TV competition or celeb following. I’m the dessert everyone comes back to, and I’ll continue to comfort for years to come.
Sweeter words were never spoken. Pick your slice at Pie in the Sky Pie Co., which opened Friday in the Heights. An off-shoot of a Conroe classic, the tiny pie hole on 19th St. also serves breakfast and lunch.

Write your order on the notepad at the table, where painted letters remind to “save room for pie.” Your generous slice comes artfully displayed (chocolate sauce is a garnish here) on a bright green plate that matches the walls and bench pillows. Too pretty to eat? Yea right. Chocolate silk, vanishing cherry, Southern pecan, buttermilk coconut. They know you can’t decide, which is why there’s a take-out area with super-cute boxed 6-inchers for further research at home.
Where the only argument will be a la mode vs. whipped cream.
